Auditions will be done in groups. Please sign up for the earliest time slot you can and stay as long as you are able to, including into the next slot. You are welcome to attend both days.

The 39 Steps runs from September 19th to October 11th, 2025

Rehearsals will start June 16th and will be Sunday – Thursday evenings.

Important information about this production of The 39 Steps

  • Understudy- will understudy Hannay, Clown 1 and 2, they will have a set date to perform the role of Clown 1 and again for Clown 2, Hannay only as needed. These dates will be set with Actor and tickets for those performances will be opened for that actors friends and family in advance.

 

  • This is a physical show that requires stamina- please let us know if you have need of any accommodation or physical restriction.

 

  • For period styling, actors must be able to easily conceal any tattoos. Actors may also be asked to trim hair and/or shave facial hair.                                                     

 

  • The 39 Steps  ensemble casting and choreographed physical comedy requires the entire cast be available for all rehearsals.  Multiple rehearsal scheduling conflicts cannot be accommodated.


Synopsis

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! This 2 time Tony and Drama Desk Award winning treat is packed with non stop laughs, over 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of 4), an onstage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good old-fashioned romance! 

Character Descriptions

Richard Hannay- male presenting- (30-50’s) –   Dapper, charming English gentleman.. Suave, dashing and debonair. Intelligent and resourceful. Actor must be able to maintain an upper-class British accent and be an adept physical comic with the stamina to be present for the entire play.

 

Female presenting:- (20-40s) 3 roles-

AnabellaThe exotic secret agent who sends Hannay on his journey and on the run from spies. Must be able to do a German accent. 

MargaretA small town farmer’s wife who dreams of adventure beyond her everyday life. Must be able to do a Scottish accent. Shy, innocent, and kind. 

PamelaThe leading lady to the end of the story. Witty, classy, and bold. Must be able to do a standard british accent.

 

Clown 1 & 2- (one older one younger) – Any gender, race, or ethnicity. The two clowns portray over 150 roles over the course of the play and are essentially EVERYONE that the two leads are not. They must be physically agile and have a great deal of stamina, in addition to having a slew of accents (especially European) and voices at their disposal. Exemplary comedic timing is ESSENTIAL! Must be able to lift certain set pieces and move adroitly throughout the stage and between roles.
