Anacortes Community Theatre - February 2021 Update

Dear Patrons and Members,

As we approach the one year mark of closing our auditorium doors and making the transition to virtual theatre, I wanted to give you an update, on behalf of the Board of Directors, on the current status of Anacortes Community Theatre and an outlook for the future. We are looking forward to live theatre in 2022 and have been humbled by the generous donations from our community that have helped us continue through this difficult year.

Having lost a great deal of revenue from ticket sales in 2020, and with no season ticket sales for 2021, we have had to make a number of adjustments to make sure the theatre will be ready to host it’s 58th season of shows in 2022. The largest of these adjustments are happening at The Annex. This building has been our main storage site for set pieces, props and costumes and has hosted our Class ACT School For the Performing Arts for the last five years.

When the pandemic hit and theatre productions and in person education classes came to a stand still, our landlord reduced the rent at The Annex and, for a few months, waived it entirely. Yet despite these generous efforts, and the efforts of many others, the Board of Directors was unable to find a way to fit this rental property into our 2022 budget. After much deliberation, the board has made the decision not to renew the lease at The Annex when it expires this November.

So what will happen to Class ACT? The Class ACT program continues through this time.  We have offered online classes, and we are excited to partner with all three Anacortes Elementary Schools to begin a virtual program this March.  Our educational programs will be growing and changing this year and next, as we adjust to programming without the Annex space. The Board of Directors is committed to our educational programs and is working hand in hand with our Operations Manager Willow McLaughlin to continue to bring theatre opportunities to the youth of our area through the Class ACT program.

What about all that “stuff”, the props, costumes, set pieces? We are currently working to reduce and reorganize our massive collection of props and costumes.  If you would like to help with this process, or find out about upcoming sales of some of these items, please sign up for our email newsletter.  Just email and ask to be included in our email news.

We are working hard to ensure the theatre will meet CDC guidelines for opening when allowed at full capacity. We plan to sell season tickets later in 2021 for our 2022 season, and all 2020 season ticket holders will have the option to renew their seats. We will keep you updated, as we know more.

Thank you all for helping us keep the theatrical arts alive in Anacortes during this unprecedented year.  A great community theatre needs a great community and we are so lucky to have one.
