SUBMIT A PLAY FOR OUR 2025 SEASON

The Anacortes Community Theater (ACT) Play Selection Committee is seeking submissions from prospective directors who are interested in directing a play. We are excited to share we will be returning to our previous format for our Play Day event and season selection of shows for the 2025 season!

Play Day will be hosted at the theatre on June 23rd at 1pm.  Prospective Directors will have the opportunity to submit their show for consideration to an audience of ACT members.  Directors will provide a brief overview of the show, followed by a short scene and/or musical number and if time allows, a quick Q&A with audience members.  At the end of all presentations, members will vote on which shows they would like to see included in the season.  The top vote-getters will be read by the Play Selection Committee to be considered for inclusion in the season.

Many factors go into selecting a well-balanced season and the final play selection is made by the Play Selection Committee and  approved by the Board of Directors. We seek to offer plays that address a wide range of interests and appeal to a diverse and inclusive audience. When shaping our season we consider our audience’s taste as well as what would challenge them. We also consider our talent pool, the technical requirements, and what plays have been done recently.

Since 1964, Anacortes Community Theatre (ACT) has served the Anacortes community and the wider Skagit Valley by presenting high-quality live performances performed by talented volunteer community members. At ACT we do plays in every style and genre, five each season, from large to small, musical and straight plays. Look HERE to see the kinds of plays we have produced in the past.

DIRECTOR QUALIFICATIONS

• Previously directed, assistant directed, or stage managed at ACT or previously directed at another theater. Experience must be approved by the Play Selection Committee. If you have not previously directed at ACT, please include a resume or a list of credits with your submission.
• If you have never directed at ACT before it is highly recommended (but not required) that you volunteer as an Assistant Director, Stage Manager, or in some other volunteer position, for an ACT production first.
• If the Play Selection Committee approves your experience and you are selected as a director and have never directed at ACT before, a mentor will be assigned to guide you through the process of working at ACT.
• The choice of a director is always subject to the approval of the Board.
• Directors must be an ACT member in good standing. Becoming a member is a yearly commitment, either by  season ticket or membership purchase. If you are not a season ticket holder, click HERE to purchase a membership.

DIRECTOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conceptualize and develop the artistic vision for each production to create a cohesive and visually appealing production in alignment with ACT’s goals and objectives.
• Lead the casting process, providing guidance and feedback to ensure the right talent is chosen for each role.
• Conduct rehearsals, guiding actors in interpreting characters, blocking, and delivering captivating performances.
• Work with the Producer to oversee the production schedule, ensuring that deadlines are met and the production stays within budget.
• Maintain effective communication with ACT’s Theatre Manager, and Production team, keeping them informed about the progress of each production via weekly Production meetings.

HOW TO SUBMIT A PLAY

• Attend Pre-Play Day Meeting on May 18th at 11am at ACT. 
• Submit the Play Day application materials to carla@acttheatre.com. Click HERE to download the application.  
• Create a flyer and presentation for Play Day. Click HERE for an example of Play Day flyers. 
• Present your submission at Play Day on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at 1pm.
• Directors may submit up to 3 plays/musicals. Consider submitting plays of different styles/cast sizes, etc.
